A Simple Guide on How to Read Your Electric Meter

June 12, 2025

We all rely on electricity every single day. From that first cup of coffee brewed in the morning to the lights we switch off before bed, it powers our lives. But have you ever wondered where those numbers on your monthly electric bill actually come from? Understanding your energy consumption can empower you to make smarter choices and potentially save money.

The key to this understanding lies right outside your home: your electric meter. While the array of dials and numbers might seem intimidating at first glance, with a little guidance, anyone can learn to decipher its secrets. Buzz Electrical is here to do just that!

While newer homes may boast digital electric meters with easy-to-read LCD displays, many of us still have the classic analog meters, characterized by a series of small, circular dials. Don’t worry, both types are straightforward to understand once you know what to look for. Let’s dig in, shall we?

Decoding the Analog Electric Meter: Step-by-Step

Think of an analog electric meter as a collection of tiny clocks working together. Here’s how to make sense of them:

1. What Your Meter Measures:

Your analog electric meter typically features four to six circular dials, each marked with numbers from zero to nine. As electricity flows through your home, these dials turn. The readings displayed on these dials represent your total electricity consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh). To put it simply, one kilowatt-hour is the amount of energy it takes to power a 100-watt light bulb for 10 hours.

2. The Art of Reading the Dials:

Now for the reading itself! Follow these steps carefully:

  • Read from Left to Right: Just like reading a book, you’ll interpret the dials from left to right.
  • Mind the Direction: You might notice that some dials are numbered clockwise, while others are counterclockwise. Ignore the direction of the numbers. Focus solely on where the pointer on each dial is currently positioned.
  • When Between Numbers: If the pointer on a dial falls between two numbers, always record the lower number.
  • Pointer Directly on a Number: This is where it can get slightly tricky. If the pointer is sitting exactly on a number, take a look at the dial immediately to its right.
  • If the dial to the right has NOT yet passed zero, record the lower number on the current dial.
  • If the dial to the right HAS passed zero, record the higher number on the current dial.

3. Recording Your Readings for Insight:

Your electric meter doesn’t reset to zero at the beginning of each month. Instead, it continuously tracks your cumulative electricity usage. To determine your monthly consumption, you’ll need to:

  • Record the readings from your meter at the same time each month.
  • Subtract the previous month’s reading from the current month’s reading. The difference will tell you how many kilowatt-hours you used during that period.

Understanding the Digital Electric Meter

If your home has a digital electric meter (sometimes called a smart meter), the process is significantly simpler and straightforward. Instead of analog dials, you’ll see an LCD screen displaying a series of numbers.

  • Focus on the Main Reading: While the screen might cycle through various information for the electric company, the number you’re interested in is usually the largest and most centrally located series of digits. This represents your total kilowatt-hour consumption.
  • Record and Subtract: Just like with an analog meter, record this number each month and subtract the previous month’s reading to calculate your monthly energy usage.

Empower Yourself with Knowledge

By taking a few minutes each month to read your electric meter, you gain valuable insight into your energy consumption habits. This awareness can help you identify areas where you might be able to reduce your usage and potentially lower your monthly bills.
