    How to Store Christmas Decorations

Now that the new year is here, it’s time for the Christmas decorations to come down. If better household organization is an item on your list of New Year’s resolutions, your decorations are a great place to start.

Storing and organizing Christmas decorations can seem daunting at first, but if you use a few of our favorite tips and tricks it can be easy. Here is our guide on how to store Christmas decorations from the team at Buzz Electrical.

    1. Wrap your Christmas lights to prevent tangles.

Christmas lights are the most time-consuming and headache-inducing Christmas decorations to store. They tangle easily, shatter easily, and twist around within containers. The quickest way to cut down on time and frustration with Christmas lights is to simply wrap them around something.

We recommend cutting strips of carboard. Simply cut to the desired size for the length and type of Christmas lights, and then create a small notch at one end of the strip. Take your lights and slide one end of the cord through the notch so that the plug is sticking out and the cord is stuck in place. Then wind the lights around the cardboard. If you don’t have cardboard handy, you can do the same thing with a coat hanger or a Pringles can.

    2. Use Ziplock bags to separate different types of decorations.

Make it easier to unpack your decorations and find what you need next year. Place ornaments and figurines of the same type into their own Ziplock bags. Gallon bags work great for storing large quantities of decorations or even Christmas lights you’ve carefully wrapped.

    3. Use household trash to store breakable items safely.

This tip might sound a little bit weird at first, but the key is to think creatively. Used tissue paper from Christmas gifts is perfect for cushioning breakable glass decorations. Shoe boxes or other packages can help you compartmentalize your ornaments and other small décor within larger storage containers. Even an empty egg carton can perfectly nestle 12 bauble ornaments and keep them safe until Christmas 2019.

    4. Invest in plastic storage bins.

After you have carefully categorized all of your decorations, they need a place to stay packed away. If you don’t already have a designated cabinet or shelf for your decorations, we recommend buying some large plastic storage bins. These bins will protect your Christmas decorations from the elements and make them easy to locate and unpack. You could even safely store them in the garage.

These tips and tricks for safe storage have served us well over the years. We hope they will help you to better organize your home.
