    thanksgiving without electricity

In a country where homes with electricity are the norm, we have a tendency to take it for granted. But if you stop to imagine what life would be like without the convenience electricity provides, it is easy to see how much we have come to rely on it.

Here is some food for thought from our team of expert electricians at Buzz Electrical this Thanksgiving season. Imagine a Thanksgiving without electricity from the moment you open your eyes until the last piece of pie has been served.

    Wake up with the sun.

Without electricity, there is not a handy cell phone or digital alarm clock on your nightstand. The morning sun is your wake-up call. After you yawn, stretch, and roll out of bed, make sure to pick out your clothes for the day next to a window. There are no lamps or light fixtures to guide you in your color-matching quest. You won’t be able to catch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on the TV, either. You’ll have to wait for pictures in a newspaper.

    Start cooking.

Once you are all dressed and ready for the day, you will have to start cooking your Thanksgiving meal pretty early. Even gas ovens require some electricity to function, so you will be roasting your turkey in a wood-burning oven instead. The flavor will still be tasty, but it will require lots of extra time and attention to stoke the flames to the right level. Speaking of your turkey, it hasn’t been waiting in a refrigerator. Your perishable goods will have to settle for some sort of ice chest instead. If you were planning on serving mashed potatoes, you will have to mash them up by hand. There are no electric mixers without electricity to power them. Since there aren’t any frozen pies at the local grocery store, you will be making dessert from scratch too.

    Prepare your house for guests.

While the fire slowly roasts your turkey and sides, you can start preparing your home for guests. Sweep the floors since you can’t vacuum them. Light some candles or kerosene lamps to set the cozy mood. Make sure the Thanksgiving tablecloth has been hand-washed before you drape it over your table.

    Dine with your family.

Listen for a knock at the door since there isn’t a doorbell to ring. Your family has arrived in a horse-drawn carriage! Gather everyone around the table and hope your meal is cooked evenly. Make sure you have enough oil or candles to last after the sun sets, or else nobody will be able to see their plates. Serve up some homemade pie for dessert. If it got cold during dinner, you’ll have to pop it back in the oven. There are no microwaves at your house.

Can you imagine a Thanksgiving without electricity?

Thankfully, you shouldn’t have to! But in the season of thankfulness, it can be eye-opening to consider all of the big and small ways electricity impacts our lives.
