Tips for a Safe Halloween

Halloween is full of fun for kiddos in costumes, but it can also be dangerous. Crime rates rise annually on Halloween night when kids and homes are more vulnerable. Make sure your home is well-lit, fire-hazard-free, and ready to greet trick-or-treaters this year! Here are six tips for a safe Halloween from your friends at Buzz Electrical.

Leave the porch light on.

To prevent accidents on your steps or front lawn, make sure trick-or-treaters can clearly see your house and arrive at the front door safely. Leaving on your outdoor lights can also help to deter criminals from bothering your home or the neighborhood kids. If you are worried about lights ruining the atmosphere for your Halloween decorations, replace the bulbs temporarily with a spooky color like orange, green, or purple.

Invest in some motion sensor lights.

After trick-or-treaters head back inside to snack on their hard-earned candy, criminals tend to hit the streets to steal from homes and cars. Scare potential threats away from your yard with motion-sensor lights. If anyone unwanted enters your yard after dark, you and your neighbors will immediately be alerted to their presence as the lights flicker on. This is often enough to deter criminals and vandals from trying to break in to your house at all.

Keep electrical cords away from high-traffic areas.

Electrical cords across your sidewalk or main path to your house (and to the candy) are just asking for someone to trip over them. Keep them wrapped up, tucked behind furniture, or clipped to the wall and out of foot traffic on Halloween.

Check cords for damage before plugging in.

The last thing you want is a truly scary Halloween thanks to electrocution or an electrical fire. If you notice the cords for your decorations are deteriorating, replace them rather than risking your family’s safety. (For more tips on preventing electrical fire hazards, check out this blog.)

Check for a UL label on your Halloween lights.

If you are using string lights to decorate for Halloween this year, make sure they have an Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label on the package. This proves that the lights have been tested and approved for safety. (If you need some electrical Halloween decoration inspiration, check out this blog.)

Unplug before bedtime.

After you have turned in for the night (or if you decide to leave the house for a late night Halloween party), make sure you turn off and unplug your lights and decorations. Rely on security measures like your porch light or motion-sensor lights for safety from burglary. Make sure everything else is unplugged to avoid a potential electrical fire.

We hope these six tips for a safe Halloween help protect your spooky fun this year.
