    tips for babyproofing your home

September is National Baby Safety Month! Babies are so curious by nature, and they seem to get their hands into everything. It is essential to babyproof your home and specifically your electrical appliances from little hands with curious minds.

At Buzz Electrical we consider our customers’ safety to be our highest priority. We have collected a list of 6 tips for babyproofing your home from electrical devices and the dangers they can pose.

    1. Cover all outlets.

When you look at an outlet receptacle, you see a source of power. When your baby looks at it, he sees a source of fun. Babies often stick fingers or small toys inside outlets, so it is important to cover all of the receptacles in your home. You can find inexpensive and effective plastic caps,  or plates that screw into the wall and cover the entire receptacle with sliding panels.

    2. Cover all cords.

Outlet covers work great when your outlets are not in use, but what about cords that stay plugged in to the wall? Babies love to yank cords out of the sockets, and this can both damage your electronics and harm your child. Try a clear plastic cord cover to keep your baby from manhandling electrical cords.

    3. Cover all power strips.

Power strips usually sit on the ground, which is exactly where your baby keeps his toys. Your baby might assume that your power strip is a perfect candidate for poking, prodding, and chewing. To keep hands and teeth away from outlets and cords, try using a plastic power strip cover.

    4. Cover stove knobs.

The knobs on your stove bear a striking similarity to knobs on many baby toys. To help keep your little one away from the temptation to turn the knobs and risk burning themselves, place covers over them as well.

    5. Keep the fridge closed.

If little ones find their way into the fridge, things can get messy pretty fast. There’s an easy hack for keeping your fridge safely closed but still convenient to access with two Command hooks. Stick one Command hook on the body of the fridge and one on the side of the door. Take a hair tie or rubber band and loop it around each of the hooks. Position it high enough that your baby can’t reach it.

    6. Keep cabinets and drawers shut.

If babies reach their hands into the cabinets or drawers, they might find all sorts of dangerous cords and contraptions. There are a wide variety of child safety locks for cabinets and drawers on the market. Try these magnetic locks that don’t require any drilling to install in your cabinets.

We hope these tips for babyproofing your home help keep your whole family safe.
