    National Electrical Safety Month

The first week of May kicks off National Electrical Safety Month! We will be focusing on electrical safety in each of our upcoming blogs.

If you’ve never heard of it, you might be wondering “What is National Electrical Safety Month?” Our team at Buzz Electrical is here to help explain the history and background of this important home service holiday. Here is everything you need to know about National Electrical Safety Month.

What is National Electrical Safety Month?

Electrical Safety Month was created by the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) to bring more public awareness to electrical safety best practices. While the ESFI has been celebrating National Electrical Safety Month since the 1990s, it first received official presidential recognition in 2014.

During this annual campaign, the ESFI offers a themed collection of new electrical safety resources, such as fact sheets, safety tips, and templates. The organization encourages electricians and citizens alike to spread the word on electrical safety practices throughout the month.

National Electrical Safety Month Theme 2019

This year, the theme for National Electrical Safety Month is “Electrical Safety During Natural Disasters.” Download this safety advocate guide for more information on how to share electrical safety tips from the ESFI with your friends, family, and connections.

For specific instructions about electrical safety before, during, and after natural disasters, check out this video. You can find more electrical safety videos for adults and kids on the ESFI YouTube channel. For safety tips and updates all month long, follow the ESFI on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

How to Practice Electrical Safety at Home

Prevention is key when it comes to electrical safety. Handle all electrical equipment with care, and call a professional electrician to help with repairs or replacements. Teach your kids to follow electrical safety rules. (Here are some tips to help.) Make sure your electrical system is up to code, including your wiring, your outlets, and your electrical panel.

To prepare for severe weather, charge your phones and other communication devices before the storm. When the storm rolls in, unplug all electronics to protect them from power surges caused by lightning strikes. If you are facing a truly severe storm, consider shutting off the main power breaker to your home to prevent any damage to your wiring.
